A glaucoma consultation is extensive, and can be time consuming. We know your time is valuable. We try to get you through as efficiently as possible but we do not take shortcuts.

Occasionally, additional tests may be required. If so, we will explain what we need to do and why, and give you an estimate on how long it will take.

A few extra moments spent now - if needed - can prevent serious eye problems in the future.

An ocular history will be taken and visual acuity will be measured.

Your doctor will examine the anterior part of the eyes, and measure the pressure. Gonioscopy will be done to evaluate the channels for fluid outflow from the eye.

Dilation may be done to open the pupil to allow examination of the back of the eye.

Your doctor will evaluate the optic nerve by viewing it through a special lens on the slit lamp.

Fundus photography (pictures of the back of the eye) are also sometimes required.
A visual field test may be done if we do not have access to one of your recent tests, or if you have never had one before.
Your doctor may order a computerized tomography of your eyes. This sophisticated, three dimensional view of your optic nerve that is done with a laser.

A video program related to your ocular problem may be shown to provide additional information if required.

Your doctor will then discuss the findings and working diagnosis. Following this, your doctor will review recommendations and suggest a treatment plan.
